This article provides a framework for selecting the best games to ensure you take the maximum amount of profits of the table. The most important thing to remember, is that fish are the sole provider of win rate at almost all stakes. While reg battling might have a certain appeal to it, often times everyone is losing.
On PokerDope you can see how much rake different poker sites take off the tables. In the table below we summarized the average rake that Pokerstars takes off the tables at each limit. Keep in mind that the rake on Pokerstars is relatively low compared to some other sites, like GGPoker.
Stake | Rake in BB/100 |
---|---|
25nl | 70.2 |
50nl | 65.9 |
100nl | 56.7 |
200nl | 44.3 |
500nl | 22.8 |
1000nl | 16.5 |
Looking at these grids, we can immediately see that we need to overcome quite a bit to ensure that we are winning. On a 50nl table, filled with regs, each player has to overcome a -11bb/100 loss.
In other words: you don’t need to just be better than your opponent, you need to be able to crush each and everyone of them, just to ensure you break even! The problem is that the edges in NLHE are not that large if your opponent plays somewhat reasonably.
Contrary to popular belief, the reason that the win rate at Zoom games is lower than in regular format is not because the regs play significantly better. In fact, the influence that regs have on each others win rate is relatively small. The biggest impact is the fact that the fish can easily nit up due to the fast-paced nature of the game. If there are fewer UTG opens with Q♣️7♠️ then the loss rate goes down significantly.
Format | BB/100 |
---|---|
Zoom | -21 |
Regular | -29 |
Anonymous* | -38 |
Not only the loss rate of the recreational, but also the position in which he’s sitting relative to you matters a ton. To show you the effects we’ve created a Fish vs Position Win Rate Calculator.

In the table below we can see that the average zoom reg loses close to a big blind for every 100 hands that he plays. Now that does not mean that there are no zoom regs that are beating the games or even that there are no regs that are crushing, it simply means that you are starting with a significant deficit should you end up grinding Zoom.
Format | BB/100 |
---|---|
Zoom | -0.7 |
Regular | 2.2 |
Anonymous* | 5.4 |

In the table below you can compare different options to play based on their win rate and make an informed decision as to which site you will give your action. Note that these grids do not take into account rakeback. For GGPoker for instance there is a fee of roughly 1bb/100 for the Bad Beat Jackpot. Since there is no fee taken you effectively get 100% rakeback on that jackpot fee. In addition to that you get more rakeback in the form of their fish buffet, leaderboards and potential affiliate rakeback than you get on another site. This does not necessarily mean that GGPoker is the best (or even a decent) option, but it is important to keep in mind.
